Although the situation has improved slightly, nearly 50% of US physicians still experience burnout. Administrative burden and overwhelming documentation continue to be big drivers of stress.
Generative artificial intelligence is offering some relief, according to Tina Shah, MD, Chief Clinical Officer of Abridge, and a pulmonary and critical care physician. Abridge uses ambient AI to generate documentation by listening to clinician-patient conversations. The technology has reduced clinician burnout by as much as 30% at some health systems, Shah told Oliver Wyman’s Christine Astorino during this video interview at the 2024 Oliver Wyman Health Innovation Summit.
Lessening administrative burden can also improve workflow and allow clinicians to work more efficiently and effectively, Shah said, noting that they’ve seen a 61% reduction in cognitive load at some organizations.
