Price comparison websites (PCWs) have transformed many sectors. Greater price transparency increases competitive intensity and in many cases leads to fundamental reshaping.
On the surface, it would appear that the US insurance market has gone through upheaval at a similar scale as travel, music, banking, etc. However noticeable by its absence is a meaningful PCW presence in the US.
In this Oliver Wyman Point of View, we make the case that distribution in US personal insurance is at a critical juncture and will be transformed as PCWs emerge. In addition to changing where and how insurance is transacted, it will have wider ripple effects across the entire activity chain.
