It is fairly well known that European freight railroads have had a tough time competing against other modes for many decades, with a resulting slow decline in freight modal share. The good news is that this decline seems to have been arrested: rail freight's overall modal share versus road and inland waterways is expected to remain around 16 percent over the near term, while the total rail freight market will grow by a slow but steady 2 percent per year through 2015.
