The Importance of Natural Capital to South Africa’s Financial Sector and Associated Risks & Opportunities

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa & Virtually Date: Aug 16, 2022

Overview

FSD Africa and the African Natural Capital Alliance (ANCA), in collaboration with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), organized this breakfast event to discuss the importance of natural capital to South Africa’s financial sector and associated risks & opportunities.
This event is part of a series of roadshows that ANCA is hosting across the continent in the lead up to COP27, that will bring together regulators, influential businesses, major financial institutions and policymakers.

At this first roadshow event in South Africa, attendees heard the results of the first study to quantify how nature-related opportunities and risks could impact the value of African financial institutions portfolios.
They heard first-hand learnings from the first African pilots of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), a risk management and disclosure framework to report and act on evolving nature-related risks.
The event was also a chance to discuss what South Africa’s policymakers, regulators and the wider financial system can do to support efforts to shift capital to nature-positive activities.

Oliver Wyman is proud to act as Knowledge and Execution Partner of ANCA and of this event.
